I walked upon this earth in wonder
until I was ravaged by another
a broken-hearted boy
desperate for a life
not as it was.

To mend the chasm underneath
in vain I searched for Your peace
despondent and dejected
I cast you away
wrought with rot festering within.

Like moss upon a decaying tree
so was my iniquity
cloaking the fragments of my heart
blotting out the Light I yearned for.

Until in a new place I saw Your face
embraced by steadfast love
like a forest fire
You charred the rot within
a rising ember, Your spirit of renewal.

Out of the ashes and soot
an invigorating new day is afoot
and though I am ephemerally broken
You’ve given me a new resolve.
